Ezra

The books of Ezra and Nehemiah are one book in the Hebrew Bible and should be seen as a unit. They were written by Ezra the priest, and Jewish tradition says he wrote the books of Chronicles, as well as Ezra and Nehemiah. Ezra was an eyewitness to many of these events and was a key character in the later events.
These books were written sometime in the fifth centurey B.C The norther tribes of Israel had been taken captive by Assyria. The Assyrians had repopulated the territory in the north and had intermarried witht he children of Israel, resulting in the Samaritian people. The Babylonians had conquered the southern kingdom of Judah and had carried most of the Jewish people from the south into captivity in Babylon. They had left the region of Judah mostly deserted, and it had laid waste for seventy years.
