Nehemiah
|
While the children of Israel were in captifity in Babylon, the Babylonian Empire was conquered by the Persians; and the Persians began to allow them to return to the area to rebuild Jeruselum and the temple. In the first phase of this return, Zerubbabel took around 50,000 people back to begin work on the reconstruction of the temple. Later, Ezra returned to with about 2,000 more people to aid in rebuilding the temple.
Fourteen years after Ezra returned to Jerusalem, Nehemiah heard from his brother and others a discouraging report of how things were going in Jerusalem. The building project was getting bogged down, morale was low, and people were being victimized by their surrounding neighbors. Nehemiah had an important job as the cupbearer to the Persian king Ataxerxes; but as he heard the problems in Jerusalem, his heart was touched and received permission from Ataxerxes to go help with the rebuilding efforts.
