Numbers
|
The Book of Numbers is the fourth book of the Pentateuch, the five books of the Old Testament that were written by Moses. It is called Numbers because it contains two major census events. In chapter 1, the fighting men who were available after the children of Israel had left Egypt and come to Mount Sanai were counted. The second census took place almost forty years later as the children of Israel were preparing to enter the Land of Promise, and this census is recorded in chapter 26. During this forty-year period, their actual number of available fighting men decreased, from 603,550 to 601,730
